Ramaphosa Pledges to Solve Eskom Crisis in Bid to Win Over Gauteng

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The influential Gauteng ANC are yet to put their weight fully behind Ramaphosa’s re-nomination bid for December, but have named their price for doing so. The Gauteng party wing are pushing for a commitment to solve all load-shedding issues and the Eskom crisis as well as abolishing e-Tolls. Ramaphosa responded with a pledge to resolve both issues.
  • Business Day reports that Jacob Zuma has been considering running for the ANC Chair position (an unlikely event should the party retain the step-aside rule) and has endorsed his ex-wife NDZ as the preferred candidate for the leadership – further deepening the divisions between the rival factions in the party.
  • Elsewhere, Daily Maverick reports that Ramaphosa is said to have claimed that Eskom is “really killing us” and came under increased pressure to relieve both the Eskom CEO de Ruyter as well as the Public Enterprises Minister Gordhan.
  • Tier 2 payrolls data will be noted later today, with PPI numbers on Thursday likely of greater importance.
