SOUTH AFRICA: Ramaphosa Signs BELA Bill Into Law

SOUTH AFRICA
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the two outstanding clauses of the controversial Basic Education Law Amendment (BELA) Act. The leader said that talks held within the government of national unity (GNU) through the "clearing house" mechanism led to the conclusion "by the leaders of the parties to the GNU" that the bill should be implemented. African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula vowed to take action against ANC leaders who were opposing the implementation of the bill.
  • Mbalula said that the ANC will hold bilateral talks with the South African Communist Party (SACP) over its decision to contest the 2026 local elections independently. The ANC and SACP are parties to the Tripartite Alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).
  • Bloomberg reported that Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will today unveil the government's preferred companies to build 7,615MW of solar, wind, gas and battery-power projects.
