SOUTH AFRICA: Ramaphosa To Deliver "January 8 Statement" Tomorrow

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The African National Congress' (ANC's) National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet later today to finalise the so-called January 8 Statement, which will be delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa tomorrow. The statement will map out the party's priorities for the year ahead. BusinessDay reported that cabinet ministers have been warning that the government cannot "miss the boat" in 2025 to introduce economic reforms. Ramaphosa will deliver the speech after a year marked by electoral setbacks, which included the first loss of parliamentary majority by the ANC in the post-apartheid era.
  • The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition pledged efforts to find a "workable resolution" of the issues faced by ArcelorMittal and the steel industry, according to a Bloomberg report. This comes after the company decided to shutter its long-steel business, threatening 3,500 jobs, amid elevated logistics and energy costs.
  • The National Treasury will offer 4.250% 2031, 5.125% 2043 and 5.125% 2058 linkers for sale today.
