Ramokgopa Admits Risk Of Stage 8 Load-Shedding, Discusses Repair Works At Kusile

  • During his visit to the Kusile power station yesterday, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that South Africa needs at least another six months before seeing some results of the efforts to alleviate power outages. The official said that three units at the Kusile station will come back online by December, which will free up generation capacity equivalent to three stages of load-shedding. However, he refused to rule out reaching Stage 8 during this winter season. As Ramokgopa toured the Kusile power plant, Eskom announced that it would be running Stage 4 rather than Stage 3 load-shedding between 05:00 and 16:00 today, due to the breakdown of a generating unit each at Arnot, Majuba and Medupi stations.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa's controversial former adviser Bejani Chauke is part of a team of sherpas laying the groundwork for the upcoming peace mission of six African heads of state to Russia and Ukraine. Chauke resigned in March over his involvement in the Phala Phala scandal but is now working for the President on a pro bono basis. Meanwhile, Minister of Intelligence Khumbudzo Ntshavheni is in Moscow this week, while other officials have reportedly been sent to Ukraine.
  • South Africa's National Security Adviser Sydney Mufamadi is set to testify to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) over corruption allegations made by former Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter.
