Ramokgopa Warns Of Delays In Life Extension Project At Koeberg Power Plant

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that he was "extremely worried about the situation at Koeberg [nuclear power plant]" after receiving two reports on the ongoing life extension project and a site visit. The official sees a risk that the prolonged outage of the power plant's Unit 1 could overlap with similar works planned for Unit 2, depriving the grid of 1,840MW worth of energy supply, which is equivalent to around two stages of load-shedding. Unit 1 was scheduled to be returned to service on June 8, but the outage was delayed until September 13 and may be extended further.
  • Eskom is implementing Stage 3 loadshedding until 16:00 today, before switching to Stage 4 in the evening. The energy utility will then move between Stages 2 and 4 thereafter until further notice. In its latest update, Eskom said that breakdowns have increased to 16,943MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance was 3,761MW.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa strengthened his position in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) as his ally, Sisisi Tolashe, won the election to become head of the ANC Women's League. Tolashe defeated former ANCWL leader Bathabile Dlamini by a landslide. The Mail & Guardian writes that this outcome "could mean the end of an era for a once powerful clique in the ANC formerly known as the radical economic transformation grouping."
