Record Day For Vaccinations As Health Min Mulls Sputnik Purchases

GERMANY

Germany recorded 719,927 COVID-19 vaccinations on 8 April, a new daily record, as increasing supply comes on line and initial wrinkles in distribution and invitations for vaccination are ironed out.

  • Germany's number if reflected for populations would mean 2,844,193 vaccinations in the US in a day (current record 4,081,959) and 585,669 vaccinations in a day in the UK (current record 844,285).
  • The good news comes a day after Health Minister Jens Spahn again raised the prospect of bilateral purchases of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine once approved by the EMA, circumventing the European Commission, which has said the purchases will not be needed.
  • Spahn was quoted yesterday speaking to WDR: "The European Commission said yesterday that it will not sign contracts [for Sputnik] like for other manufacturers — such as BioNTech, for example, so I said for Germany during the meeting of EU health ministers that we will hold bilateral talks with Russia,"
