MNI BRIEF: US CPI Could Surprise To Upside

LONDON (MNI)

U.S. headline CPI data expected later Wednesday could surprise to the upside, according to some analysts, even though it is already expected to be at the highest level since the pre-pandemic days of March 2020.

While the U.S. reflation trade lost a little air on Tuesday, with 30-year yields easing from recent highs, indicators of inflation expectations are still trading at multi-year highs. Central banks are largely playing down upside risks to inflation, although there are some voices of dissent.

Fed policy now gives it greater leeway should inflation rise above target in coming months, but a higher-than-expected reading could make for an uncomfortable question-and-answer session for Chair Jay Powell when he appears later in the day at an Economic Club of New York event.
