POWER: RenewableUK Calls for Key Reforms to Boost Offshore Wind Co-location

POWER

RenewableUK is calling for key measures to accelerate the co-location of battery storage and green hydrogen projects with offshore wind farms, aiming to remove barriers, streamline processes, and maximise the potential of renewables, according to a new report by the group.

  • RenewableUK recommends enabling developers to seek consent for both offshore wind and energy storage projects at the same time, which would help reduce delays and lower costs.
  • Additionally, the report calls for an adjustment to CfD auctions to incentivise energy storage and offshore wind co-location.
  • The group is also proposing the development of a green hydrogen pipeline network to transport hydrogen produced by offshore wind farms to areas where it’s most needed.
  • Currently, just 3MW of battery storage is co-located with offshore wind in UK waters, while 600MW of potential battery storage has already received consent.
  • Additionally, offshore wind developers are exploring opportunities for co-locating green hydrogen projects.
