Rep Tim Ryan Becomes 1st Declared Dem Candidate For Sen. Portman's Ohio Seat

US

Representative Tim Ryan (D-OH) has become the first declared Democratic candidate for the Ohio US Senate seat to be vacated by incumbent Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) in the 2022 mid-term elections.

  • Ryan is a 10-term Congressman from Ohio, having represented the state's 17th Congressional district from 2003 to 2013 and the 13th Congressional district since 2013.
  • He sits on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch that is investigating the 6 January storming of the Capitol, and in 2016 lost in his challenge to oust Nancy Pelosi as then-House Minority Leader following the 2016 presidential and congressional election.
  • The Ohio US Senate seat is viewed as one of the most significant races in the 2022 mid-term season, with Portman's retiring removing the GOP's incumbency bonus in the race. With the Senate currently split 50-50 and change in seat totals will have significant implications for the administration's ability to pass legislation.
  • Several Republicans have already declared their intention to run, including Jane Timken, former chair of the Ohio Republican party, Mike Gibbons and Josh Mandel, who both unsuccessfully ran for the GOP nomination in Ohio in the 2018 mid-terms.
