Rising Petrol Prices May Boost Inflation Expectations

AUSTRALIA DATA

National average petrol prices rose 7.8% m/m in October with the last week increasing almost 5c/L to its highest since late July (+2.7% on the week to October 30). This is after three consecutive monthly declines and partly reflects the increase in fuel tax at the end of September and higher oil prices.

  • Petrol price developments may weigh on November consumer confidence (due November 8), especially if prices continue rising at the start of the month while the survey is still being conducted.
  • Petrol prices also have a relationship with consumer inflation expectations, published November 10, thus indicating that they could tick up in November for the first time since June.
