Rising Rhine Water Levels to Ease Barge Disruption

The limitation on the capacity of barges traveling through the key waypoint through Kaub on the Rhine is set to ease as river level rises due to above average rainfall in NW Europe in the coming days.

  • Vessels carrying diesel-type fuel can currently carry less than half their full capacity at about 1,100 tons but should rise to about 2,200 tons early Saturday. The measured water level at Kaub was as low as 91cm earlier on Tuesday, well under half the 10-year seasonal average. The measured level is forecast to rise to 194cm early on Saturday morning.
  • Low water levels on the Rhine due to the mild winter and current lack of precipitation have been disrupting barge traffic in the last couple of weeks and forcing up the cost of shipping.
