GERMANY SEP RETAIL SALES -0.9% Y/Y

  • German retail trade saw a relatively robust September increase of +0.9% m/m, beating expectations of a -0.5% m/m contraction and rebounding from the -1.4% m/m fall in August.
  • This data adds colour to the surprise +0.3% q/q expansion in Friday's flash Q3 GDP print, which was largely boosted by private consumption.
  • Consumer sentiment has been extremely depressed in GFK's surveys since the onset of the Ukraine war and the rapid increase in consumer prices. However, household consumption is proving to be more robust than initially anticipated.
