Romney To Vote Against OMB Nominee Effectively Ending Confirmation Chances

Following on from the news that Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) would be voting against President Biden's nominee for director of the Office of Management and Budget Neera Tanden (see 1140GMT bullet), the news that Collins' colleague Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) will also vote against Tanden's confirmation makes the prospect of her gaining office become vanishingly small.

  • Romney's office releases statement: "Sen. Romney has been critical of extreme rhetoric from prior nominees, and this is consistent with that position. He believes it's hard to return to comity and respect with a nominee who has issued a thousand mean tweets."
  • Romney and Collins seen as two of the Republican senators most willing to work across the aisle. Without either of their votes, and with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) also voting no, it appears Tanden's nomination may be unsalvagable.
