Ruling Party Mulls Ways To Regain Momentum In Election Campaign

POLAND
  • Onet reports that the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) is considering sweeping changes to the Cabinet line-up, which could materialise in coming days. The news website suggests that as many as 17 Deputy Ministers and several Ministers could be dismissed and instructed to focus on the election campaign in their respective constituencies. The plan has been reportedly proposed by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, although other sources unofficially denied these rumours. This comes as the ruling party continues to struggle to gain fresh momentum, despite announcing a "reset" of its campaign.
  • The Cabinet is expected to discuss a bill raising monthly payouts from the universal child benefit scheme to PLN800 per child from the current PLN500. The hike has been one of the pledges made by the ruling party during the ongoing election campaign. It will be implemented automatically from next year for all recipients.
  • Almost 40% of respondents in a Rzeczpospolita/IBRIS survey said that they perceive the far-right Confederation to be the real alternative to the two largest parties. Recent opinion polling suggests that Confederation may decide who forms the next government.
