Runoff Could Be Needed For GA Senate Seat, Gives Dems Chance Of Parity

US

Latest update from Georgia shows incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue's share of the vote has slipped below 50%, currently at 49.997%.

  • While Perdue would not lose because of this, with no candidate receiving over 50% of the vote a run-off would take place between the two highest-placed candidates, Perdue and his Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff.
  • Would coincide with the run-off between Democrat Raphael Warnock and incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler for the Georgia special senate election on January 5 2021.
  • At present it seems likely that the Republicans will hold onto their senate seats in North Carolina and Alaska. This would give them 50 senate seats.
  • As such, in the scenario two run-offs are required in Georgia, should the Democrats pick up both seats it would mean a 50-50 split in the Senate, where the vice president would cast the decisive vote.
