Russia, China Intensify Talks on Power of Siberia 2 Line

NATURAL GAS

Russia and China are intensifying talks regarding gas supplies via the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said.

  • "We are continuing negotiations, and the intensity has increased," Shulginov said.
  • The Power of Siberia 2 project plans to supply up to 50bcm/yr of gas to China through Mongolia from resources in Western Siberia.
  • Design and survey work began in February 2022 as part of the project to construct the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline that will pass through the territory of Mongolia and extend the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline.
  • Russia’s Deputy PM Alexander Novak said earlier this year Russia hopes the pipeline deal with China can by agreed by the end of the year.
  • Moscow hopes to increase its Far East natural gas exports by fivefold to 170bcm by 2030, compared to pre-war shipments, Novak said in June. Flows to China via the existing Power of Siberia pipeline have steadily increased and are expected to rise to 22bcm this year and to 38bcm by 2025.
