Russia-EU Gas Flows via Ukraine Hit 1.31 Bcm in May: Platts

NATGAS

Russian gas deliveries to Europe via Ukraine totalled 1.31 Bcm in May, up 5% on the year, but just 39% of contracted volumes, according to Ukrainian gas industry group AGPU, cited by Platts.

  • Ukraine’s grid operator Naftogaz signed a 5-year deal with Gazprom in 2019 that will expire at the end of this year, with Ukrainian officials reiterating that Kyiv will not extend the deal.
  • "The last remaining 14 Bcm that European companies are still receiving via the Ukrainian route do need replacement in such a way that it doesn't impact security of supply in some member states," EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said.
  • "There are existing alternative corridors that could provide gas to landlocked countries that are still buyers of Russian gas,” she added.
  • EU countries still importing Russian gas are Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
