Russia Keeps the Pressure on EU Gas Supplies, EU May Widen Belarus Sanctions

  • Russia is set to keep gas supplies to Europe largely capped for another day even after President Vladimir Putin promised to boost flows from Monday.
    • German natural gas orders via a key Russian pipeline signaled flows will remain just a fraction of normal levels (~25%) again on Tuesday, according to data from grid operator Gascade.
    • Only a fraction of capacity was booked on the Ukrainian-Slovakian border, and none was confirmed for gas entering the Mallnow compressor station, which receives the fuel from the Yamal-Europe link.
    • Analysts warn the lack of additional supply could lead to more upside pressure on Natgas ahead of a cold winter
  • EU says it may widen sanctions on Belarus to punish it for the "hybrid attack" of migrant heading to Europe. EU authorities are exploring ways to sanction those involved in human trafficking.
    • In response, Poland has increased troop numbers on the Belarus border to 12,000 in response to a surge in illegal migration from Belarus. Poland described the situation as "an attempt at mass border crossing by force" with forces now on full alert
  • Gazprom says Nord Stream 2 has been completed and is ready to be launched
