Russia Ships First LNG Cargo via Northern Route

LNG

Russia’s Novatek sent its first cargo of LNG to Asia via the Arctic Northern Sea route, according to Kommersant, cited by Reuters.

  • The Arc7 ice class gas carrier Eduart Toll, accompanied by the nuclear-powered Sibir icebreaker, departed from Yamal LNG June 21 on route to China.
  • While the route is physically challenging, it could slash journey times from Europe-Asia as the Kremlin pivots towards eastern markets.
  • A voyage from Japan to Europe takes just 10 days via the Northern route, compared to 29 days via the Cape of Good Hope and 22 days via Suez, according to the Arctic Institute.
  • Eyes remain on Novatek’s other gas project, 6.6m mtpa Arctic LNG 2, which was due to be exporting cargoes earlier this year but has been hampered by western sanctions.
  • The project is struggling due to a lack of ice class tankers and having lost access to western technology providers.
