Russian Coal to China Rises

COAL

China's coal imports from Russia fell in December, but were up 20% in 2022 versus the year prior.

  • 6.89 million tonnes of Russian coal reached China last month, down from 7.16 million tonnes in November according to General Administration of Customs data. 4.08 million tonnes arrived in the same period in 2021.
  • For the full year of 2022, China's coal imports from Russia surged 20% from a year earlier to 68.06 million tonnes.
  • Indonesia remained China’s top coal supplier. Arrivals of Indonesian coal were 17.53 million tonnes last month, down from 20.04 million tonnes in November.
  • During the January-December period, China's imports totalled 170.71 million tonnes, down 12.6% from 2021.
