Russian Envoy: Latest Talks On JCPoA 'Not As Final As Negotiators Hoped'

Russia's permanent representative to international institutions in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov tweets: "Unfortunately the fifth round of the Vienna talks did not become final as the negotiators hoped. Experience tells us that during such complicated negotiations exact forecasts are not possible. However the view of [Iran's chief negotiator] Mr.Araghchi seems to be realistic judging by the progress achieved."

  • Comes in response to Araghchi stating last night that "the next round of the talks in Vienna, logically, could and should be the final round...we decided to have a week for break and consultations".
  • There remains significant divergence in potential outcomes of talks, ranging from no progress and conservative figures in Tehran forcing Iran to remain non-compliant with the deal, through to Iran agreeing to go back to full compliance potentially bringing the US back into to the deal.
