Russian Gas Production Surged in Q1 on Strong Demand and Exports

Russian gas production increased almost 10% (or 16 bcm) yoy in Q1 2024 supported by stronger domestic demand and higher exports, although remained 3% below levels from 2021, according to IEA analyst Greg Molnar.

  • Domestic consumption was boosted by cold weather, with severe cold driving daily record demand peaks in January.
  • Pipeline gas exports to China were estimated to increase by 2bcm in Q1 and in line with the contractual arrangements. while exports also to Uzbekistan rose around 9mcm/d.
  • Pipeline gas supply to Europe increased by 25% (or 2.7bcm) yoy in Q1 with higher supply to Turkey and an 18% increase in flows to the EU.
  • LNG exports increased by around 10% yoy.
