Russian Oil Product Stock Levels Ran Down Ahead of Ban

OIL PRODUCTS

In the run up to the recent Russia oil product export bans, the surplus in gasoil inventories that had been built up in 1Q23 had been drawn down according to Petro Logistics.

  • Based on Petro Logistics figures, the rebuild in stocks in January was quick suggesting the ban may not last long if its intent is to build stockpiles to the same level. (see chart)
  • It follows similar reports yesterday from a Bloomberg source claiming Russian diesel exports had slipped 28% ahead of the ban.
  • Russia exported an average of about 65,700 tons of diesel a day from Sept. 1 to 20 via sea ports and railways, according to the Bloomberg source. It compares to an average of 91,800 tons/day for most of August.
