Russian Seaborne Crude to Asia Increases Post EU Ban

Barring a small crude volume delivered into Bulgaria, seaborne crude flows from Russia into Europe have halted since December 5 when the import ban was implemented.

  • With flows no longer heading to Europe – vessels have redirected mainly towards China and India instead.
  • Seaborne crude flows to China, India and Turkey as well as countries showing no destination jumped on the four-week average to December 9, four times higher than prior to the invasion according to Bloomberg vessel tracking.
  • A higher percentage of vessels than usual are also leaving western Russian ports without signalling a destination but heading for the Suez Canal towards Asian buyers.
