S. Korea Fired Warning Shots After N. Korean Soldiers Crossed Border

NORTH KOREA

South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that a group of around 20 North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the inter-Korean land border earlier this week. The North Korean troops reportedly withdrew as South Korea fired warning shots.

  • The incursion beyond the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) took place around 12:30pm on Sunday and North Korean soldiers returned to their side of the border immediately after hearing the warning shots. South Korean military suggested that the North Korean troops may have crossed the border unintentionally.
  • The incident occurred amid heightened inter-Korean tensions, with the North deploying trash-carrying balloons across the borders, while the South responds with propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts. The psychological tug-of-war has been parallelled by military posturing from both sides.
