Salmond To Deliver Presser At 1400GMT As Election Campaign Starts

SCOTLAND

Scotland's former First Minister Alex Salmond is set to deliver a press conference at 1400GMT, with the prospect of him launching legal action against Leslie Evans, the permanent secretary to the Scottish government due to the handling of the case regarding sexual harassment allegations against Salmond.

  • Earlier this week, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was cleared of breaching the ministerial code, but a parliamentary committee found that she did mislead parliament during the course of the investigation.
  • Salmond's presser comes at a poor time for the pro-independence Scottish National Party, with the campaign for the 6 May Scottish Parliament elections due to get underway soon. The SNP needs a strong result (i.e. a majority) to bolster its demand for a second independence referendum.
  • Should the campaign be overshadowed by Salmond's legal action and further recriminations within the SNP, it could damage the party's prospect of winning a majority and therefore dent the chances of a second independence referendum in 2021 or 2022.
