SARB Pauses Rate-Hike Cycle, DA Press Ahead With Court Case Re: ICC Arrest Warrants

  • The SARB paused its longest monetary tightening cycle since 2006 while warning that risks to the inflation risks remain tilted to the upside. The central bank reaffirmed its readiness to resume interest-rate hikes should these upside risks materialise. Governor Lesetja Kganyago declared that the fight against inflation is still on and refused to confirm that the tightening cycle is over. The decision to stand pat on rates was made after a vote in which two dissenters called for a 25bp hike.
  • The Democratic Alliance (DA) said that it will continue seeking a court order forcing the government to enforce ICC arrest warrants, even as Russian President Vladimir Putin decided not to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in person. Meanwhile, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said that South Africa continues to speak with diplomats from around the world and its non-aligned stance doesn't mean that South Africa supports everything that Russia does.
  • Johannesburg power utility warned customers that incoming frosty weather conditions could lead to another flare-up in load-shedding as demand increases.
