SARB Ready To Act On Inflation, Electricity Minister To Provide Update On Power Stations

SOUTH AFRICA
  • South Africa's central bank remains "ready to act" on inflation, Governor Lesetja Kganyago said in a speech yesterday. The MPC believes that it has taken the right decisions so far, but "this cannot preclude further steps if inflation and inflation expectations continue to surprise higher." The Governor reiterated that "we do not know what the terminal interest rate level will be" as the central bank continues to monitor data, while higher food and fuel-price inflation are a direct consequence of exchange-rate depreciation.
  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that the lifting of the national state of disaster over the ongoing energy crisis will not affect the work of his department in any meaningful way. The official is set to provide an update on his review of all South African power stations which he toured in the recent days.
  • Data on South Africa's electricity output will be published at 12:00BST/13:00SAST.
