ScoMo Retains National Support But ALP On Course To Win QLD Vote

AUSTRALIA

Recent opinion polling in Australia shows Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his governing centre-right Liberal/National coalition retaining support at the national level following the presentation of the federal budget earlier in the month.

  • Preferred Prime Minister: Scott Morrison (L/NP, Conservative): 50% (+1), Anthony Albanese (ALP, Centre-left): 25% (-1), Don't know: 25%, (chg. vs. 08/09/20), Essential Polling 20/10/20, Sample size: 1,082
  • PM Scott Morrison's performance: Approve: 63% (-1), Disapprove: 27% (-1), Don't know: 10% (+2), chg vs. 08/09/20. Essential Polling. Fieldwork: 20/10/20, Sample size: 1,082
  • Morrison's strong polling is likely indicative of broad public approval of his gov'ts handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, which has seen infection and fatality numbers suppressed effectively in recent weeks following an outbreak in the state of Victoria.
  • Next federal election not due until 2022.

Despite Morrison's popularity at the national level, the centre-left Labor Party (ALP) appears on course to retain power in the state of Queensland in the 31 October regional election according to recent opinion polls.

  • Approval rate of Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (Labor): Satisfied: 63%, Dissatified: 33%, Uncommitted: 4%, +/- vs. 16-19/09/20, Fieldwork: 09-14/10/20, Sample size: 1001, Newspoll
