UK
UK: Scottish National Party (SNP) set to launch election campaign in Edinburgh,
with party leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon due to speak just
after 1100GMT (0600ET, 1200CET).
- Big announcement is their plan to introduce a 'NHS Protection Bill', which
would seek to block the UK gov't from using the health service as a "bargaining
chip" in any future trade negotiations with the US.
- The SNP currently holds 35 of Scotland's 59 Westminster seats. The
second-placed Conservatives - currently holding 13 seats - could lose many of
their Scottish seats following resignation of the popular Ruth Davidson as
leader and strong anti-Brexit sentiment in Scotland.
- Main challenge to SNP likely to come from Lib Dems who prior to 2015 were the
second force in Scottish politics. SNP will be fighting hard to unseat Lib Dem
leader Jo Swinson in her East Dunbartonshire seat (maj 5,339)
- SNP could prove crucial following the election in propping up a Labour
minority should the vote deliver a hung parliament. SNP's price will be a second
independence referendum, something Labour seem likely to acquiesce to.
