Second Coal Fired Power Plant Restarts in Germany

ELECTRICITY

Heyden 4 hard coal-fired 875mw power plant will again produce electricity for the market from today and probably until 30 April 2023 according to Uniper.

  • Germany has reactivated the coal-fired power plant in an attempt to reduced natural gas consumption used to generate electricity. German regulation is allowing the return to operation of coal and oil fired generation initially until the end of the winter 22.
  • The envisaged operation of Heyden 4 will be restricted due to limitations on the rail transportation capacity of hard coal to the site. Uniper had ended commercial operation of the power plant at the end of 2020 as part of its decarbonisation plan.
  • In early August, the coal-fired Mehrum plant in Hohenhameln became the first to return from reserve.
  • More coal-fired plants are expected to be brought back into operation soon.
