The Biden administration has threatened to restrict arms transfers to Israel, if it doesn’t take ‘concrete steps’ to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip within a month, according to a letter reported by Israel’s N12 network.
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a letter to Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant that, "In accordance with Israel's commitment in March 2024” Israel must not “prevent the transfer of American humanitarian aid or aid supported by the government in Gaza.”
- The letter continues: “Israel must take concrete steps within 30 days. Failure to implement these steps may lead to consequences for the policy of the United States in accordance with American law.”
- The letter appears limited in scope and is similar to a previous threat by the Biden administration ahead of Israel’s invasion of Rafah that resulted in the US withholding the transfer of 2,000-pound bombs.
- As the letter is focused on relieving an escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and does not appear to touch on Israel’s broader military operation Gaza, or its ongoing operation in Lebanon, it is unlikely to compel a major pivot in Israel’s strategy.
