Sharp Decline In Approval Of Congress Following House Speaker Dysfunction

US

A new survey from Gallup has found that voter approval of Congress has declined to the lowest level since 2017, following the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and subsequent three-weeks of failed attempts to elect a successor.

  • Gallup: "Frustration with government leaders is apparent in Americans’ naming government as the most important problem facing the country, with 19% mentioning that issue. Fourteen percent name the economy and, separately, inflation, while 13% believe immigration is the top policy concern at the moment."
  • Democrat strategists will hope that the collapse of confidence in the legislative branch, whilst the House of Representatives is under Republican control, will feed into a campaign narrative advanced by Democrats that the GOP too chaotic to be trusted with governance.
