Shigeyuki Goto To Be Named New Economic Revitalisation Minister

JAPAN

Former Health, Labour and Welfare Minister Shigeyuki Goto will replace Daishiro Yamagiwa as Minister of Economic Revitalisation, Japanese media outlets report.

  • Yamagiwa was forced to step down amid piling criticism over his connections with the Unification Church and repeated failures to disclose them in a timely and transparent manner.
  • Goto is not associated with any faction within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, where he is currently in charge of social security policy matters.
  • The press points to Goto being well versed in tax policies and public finance, which should make him a suitable candidate to leadthe implementation of PM Kishida's economic agenda.
  • Goto's certification ceremony will take place in the Imperial Palace this evening.
