Equities have struggled to follow through on Thursday's strong upward momentum, with European markets off highs and U.S. futures drifting. Attention will be paid on both sides of the Atlantic to US fiscal measures, as well as UK-EU negotiations and COVID lockdowns in Europe.

  • Asian stocks closed mixed (China re-opened from holiday), with Japan's NIKKEI down 27.38 pts or -0.12% at 23619.69 and the TOPIX down 8.09 pts or -0.49% at 1647.38. China's SHANGHAI closed up 54.024 pts or +1.68% at 3272.076 and the HANG SENG ended 74.22 pts lower or -0.31% at 24119.13.
  • European stocks are mixed, with the German Dax down 19.32 pts or -0.15% at 13052.19, FTSE 100 up 34.74 pts or +0.58% at 6005.06, CAC 40 up 12.63 pts or +0.26% at 4941.28 and Euro Stoxx 50 down 1.15 pts or -0.04% at 3262.93.
  • U.S. futures are a little higher but off best session levels, with the Dow Jones mini up 92 pts or +0.33% at 28407, S&P 500 mini up 13 pts or +0.38% at 3450.75, NASDAQ mini up 38 pts or +0.33% at 11578.
