ISRAEL: Sky News Arabia-Hamas Could Cede Gaza Control To PA

ISRAEL

Sky News Arabia reported on 16 Feb that Hamas has "expressed in a message to the Palestine Liberation Organization its readiness to hand over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority (PA)". Hamas claims that their gov't employees in Gaza would have to be "re-absorbed into the new administration or that they would retire, with a guarantee that their salaries be paid."

  • Sky News Arabia: "Hamas' acceptance to hand over the governance of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority came after significant Egyptian pressure on the movement's delegation that visited Cairo."
  • The PA - controlled by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah - has not controlled Gaza since being ousted by Hamas in a bloody civil war in 2007.
  • The handing back of political control of Gaza could prove an important point with regards to negotiations over the second phase of a ceasefire agreement with Israel. While the answer of which group will eventual control and governorship of Gaza remains unclear, what is clear is that Israel (and the US) are not likely to enter into any permanent ceasefire agreement with Hamas still in effective governing control of the strip.
  • Talks on the second phase of the ceasefire deal are set to continue this week according to US presidential envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff.
