SOUTH AFRICA: EFF Holds March Over Phala Phala, Trades Barbs With MK Party

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The Constitutional Court holds a hearing in a case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who are seeking a verdict setting aside parliament's decision not to press ahead with impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the so-called Phala Phala scandal. Local political analysts told TimesLive that a verdict forcing lawmakers to restart the proceedings would test the cohesiveness of the Government of National Unity (GNU), as some of its constituent parties have earlier initiated legal cases against Ramaphosa over the matter.
  • Meanwhile, the opposition has struggled to use this opportunity to unite, with EFF leader Julius Malema declaring that members of ex-President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party have been barred from attending a rally in front of the Constitutional Court's buildings today. Speaking to the media on Monday, Malema defined the MK party as the EFF's "biggest enemy," with relations between the parties becoming "even worse" after the MK party started poaching senior EFF executives.
  • South Africa's newly appointed ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool said that Pretoria sees the US as its "trade and investment partner of choice." The diplomat flagged the need to address the "worrying" full review of bilateral relations initiated by the US House of Representatives over South Africa's foreign policy choices.
  • South Africa's leading indicator improved to 113.9 in September from 112.8 prior, according to data released by the SARB.
  • The National Treasury holds a regular bond auction today.
