South Africa Hopes To Revive Saudi-SA Refinery Project

REFINING

South Africa hopes to convince Saudi Aramco to revive its interest in building the Saudi-SA refinery project in South Africa, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said.

  • The Saudi-SA refinery project earmarked for Richard’s Bay in July 2018, but the proposal never materialised.
  • The minister brought the project back on the agenda during a visit to Saudi Arabia last month, according to News24.
  • South Africa is looking to add refinery capacity after the Sapref refinery was significantly destructed in April following floods in the region.
  • “We made efforts to revive Sapref, but it was subject to disaster in KwaZulu Natal. We are now engaging a number of players. One is Saudi Aramco’s proposal to build a refinery in the country”, Mantashe said.
