SOUTH AFRICA: Ramaphosa's Cabinet To Be Sworn In, Gauteng Talks Collapse Again

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Further negotiations failed to bring any breakthrough in Gauteng, South Africa's commercial hub, where the announcement of the provincial cabinet had to be postponed again. Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Hellen Zille said during a media briefing that her party was willing to accept four portfolios for itself, five for the African National Congress (ANC) and one for the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). She accused the ANC of negotiating in bad faith and said that Premier Panyaza Lesufi's offer of three portfolios for the DA, while the ANC would keep six, did not reflect the outcome of the election. Zille warned that if the ANC refused to revise its offer, the DA would be willing to "go into opposition," which is its "comfort zone." ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula is expected to comment on the matter at 10:00BST/11:00SAST.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa's cabinet will be sworn in later today after parties forming the government of national unity (GNU) managed to finalise their talks last weekend. DA negotiator Tony Leon warned that his party could leave the GNU if its ministers are not allowed to exercise authority effectively.
  • SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago will speak alongside ECB's Klaas Knot at the ECB Forum at 14:30BST/15:30SAST.
  • The latest reading of South Africa's S&P Global PMI will be published at 08:15BST/09:15SAST.
