SOUTH AFRICA: Shivambu Appointed MK Party SecGen, Eskom In Talks With Jo'burg

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Former deputy leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Floyd Shivambu has been appointed Secretary General of ex-President Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Shivambu was the EFF's number two before jumping ship to the MK Party a few months back, which was followed by several more high-profile defections - although Shivambu insisted that these officials were not poached by Zuma's party. The string of defections has amplified tensions between the EFF and MK Party, who cooperate in the opposition "Progressive Caucus" in parliament, but compete for a similar electoral base.
  • Bloomberg reported that Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will engage with Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and City Power executives later today to discuss the city's outstanding debt to Eskom. The utility has recently threatened to disrupt power supply to the city over unpaid bills.
  • BusinessDay reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa's lawyers will seek to persuade the Constitutional Court that a panel led by ex-Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo relied on hearsay rather than hard evidence while preparing a report on the so-called Phala Phala scandal that could have led to Ramaphosa's impeachment. The case was brought by the EFF and ATM parties, who are challenging parliament's decision to ditch the report.
