SOUTH KOREA: Oppo. Ldr Calls On Citizens To Assemble At Parliament
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition liberal Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has called on the country's citizenry to assemble at the National Assembly in an effort to force President Yoon Suk-yeol to reverse his imposition of emergency martial law. Lee: “The National Assembly needs to vote to lift martial law, but there is a high possibility that the military will be mobilized to arrest members of the National Assembly.” Lee: “Citizens, please come to the National Assembly now, It’s late, but you must protect this country...You, the citizens, who are the owners of this country, must step forward...I ask you, citizens, to lend us your strength so that the National Assembly can vote to lift martial law and so that we can firmly protect this country’s democracy.”
- Lee: "President Yoon’s illegal declaration of martial law is invalid...From this moment on, President Yoon Seok-yeol is not the president of the Republic of Korea.” The declaration coming in the middle of the night means it is perhaps too early to tell what the public reaction will be. In June 1987 mass protests and civil disobedience resulted in direct presidential elections and the establishment of the Sixth Republic, while prior to that in April 1960 large-scale protests forced President Syngman Rhee from power.
- Barak Ravid at Axios: "White House National Security Council spokesperson told me the Biden Administration is in contact with the South Korean government and "is monitoring the situation closely"."
- The imposition of martial law will be a major concern to the White House given that the Biden administration has made the trilateral relationship between the US, South Korea and Japan a cornerstone of its Indo-Pacific strategy as an exemplar of unity among liberal democracies in the region.
