Spain Increased LNG from Russia 84% Last Year

Spain’s imports of Russian LNG have increased 84% in the last year despite EU efforts to reduce energy dependence on Russia.

  • Imports between Mar 2022 and Feb 2023 rose to 61,344GWh, compared with 33,305GWh in the same period a year earlier, according to Enagas data. Imports from the US grew 48% in the period while imports from Algeria declined.
  • Spain’s Naturgy Energy has a 20-year contract to purchase LNG from Yamal LNG in the Arctic until 2038.
  • European LNG flows from Russia increased more than 30% last year even though pipeline supplies have reduced significantly. Nealy half of western European LNG imports originated from US and 16% came from Russia.
  • EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson on 9 Mar called on member states to stop buying Russian LNG and to not sign any new contracts with Russia once existing contracts have expired.
