Spain Seeks EU Funding for Gas Pipelines

The EU should pay for any new gas connections between Spain and its neighbors to secure alternatives to Russian gas supplies according to the Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez this week.

  • Spain is looking to build a gas pipeline between Catalonia and France to send LNG supplies landed in Spain towards the rest of the continent. There is also the potential for a pipeline linking Spain to Italy.
  • "It must be the European Union who pays for these interconnections," Sanchez told reporters, "We are talking about capacities that were financed by the efforts of the Spanish tax payer and that we will make available to the European Union,".
  • Spain has the highest number of regasification terminals for LNG in Europe, at six. However, Spain is not well connected via pipelines to other countries, limiting European access to LNG imports. Spain primarily imports LNG from Algeria.
