Spanish IP At 10-Month High

SPAIN MAY IND PRD +4.3% M/M, +26.0% Y/Y; APR +1.2% M/M

  • Spanish IP rose to 4.3%, in contrast to markets looking for a decline to 0.4%.
  • This marks the highest reading since Jul 2020.
  • Annual production decelerated to 26.0% in May, but still reflecting base effects due to the sharp decline at the beginning of the crisis.
  • May's m/m uptick was led by a 12.7% increase in consumer durable goods output.
  • Meanwhile, intermediate goods output came in flat and energy as well as capital goods production eased by 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively.
  • Consumer non-durables output saw the largest m/m decrease in May, down 6.1%.
  • The best performing sectors were repairs and installation of machinery equipment (+7.3%), followed by the manufacturing of electrical material and equipment (+5.7%).
  • On the other hand, motor vehicle production saw the largest drop (-16.1%).
