State of Emergency to Be Declared in Coming Days

  • Ramaphosa is expected to declare a national state of emergency in the coming days in an effort to gain more control over the rolling loadshedding that’s causing persistent power outages across the country. Ramaphosa is seen addressing the nation within the coming days and will outline his plans to steady the grid.
  • Fin24 reports on the planned SARS strikes, with unions set to resume their labour action against the revenue service after terms were not reached on a pay deal. The unions behind the action cited the success of the recent Eskom wildcat strikes while rejecting the proposed 1.39% pay rise.
  • Late yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg, the Labour Minister Nxesi outlined plans to add as many as 2 million new jobs before the next wave of elections in 2024. Nxesi noted planned policy amendments to prioritize South Africans’ access to jobs over foreign nationals with the same skills, he said. He added that reducing undocumented immigration will be vital to addressing unemployment.
  • Manufacturing production data takes focus going forward, expected at 1.5% on a M/M basis and -2.6% on the year.
