Strike-Inflicted Platinum Mine Remains Stalled

  • Negotiations have reached a stalemate at the Implats Platinum Mine in Rustenburg after workers rejected their union leadership, according to ENCA. Over 2,000 workers have remained underground since reporting for duty on Monday morning, with only 75 workers resurfacing and most of them on chronic medication.
  • COSATU unions have stated they will continue to push the government for a pro-poor budget in the new year that would benefit workers. The federation compiled a list of government's shortfalls and successes for the year, insisting that providing relief for the poor and protecting workers should be top of the agenda.
