Suga Gov't Disapproval Hits Highest On Record In Yomiuri Poll

Disapproval ratings for the gov't of Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga hit the highest level on record in any poll conducted by outlet Yomiuri in July, with 53% of respondents disapproving of the gov't compared to 37% that approved.

  • The sustained increase in the gov'ts disapproval ratings since March 2021 coincide with rising COVID-19 cases (resulting in stricter/more prevalent state of emergency measures) and rising public antipathy towards the hosting of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, due to take place behind closed doors from 23 July-8 August.
