Disapproval ratings for the gov't of Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga hit the highest level on record in any poll conducted by outlet Yomiuri in July, with 53% of respondents disapproving of the gov't compared to 37% that approved.

- The sustained increase in the gov'ts disapproval ratings since March 2021 coincide with rising COVID-19 cases (resulting in stricter/more prevalent state of emergency measures) and rising public antipathy towards the hosting of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, due to take place behind closed doors from 23 July-8 August.
