Support For ANC Drops, Eskom Extends Loadshedding Suspension

  • A Sabri Strategy/Brenthurst Foundation opinion poll showed that South Africa is more likely than ever to have a coalition government after the 2024 elections. Support for the ruling ANC dropped sharply to 41% from 48% a year ago, with voters listing joblessness, corruption, load shedding, and crime as the most burning issues. Support for the opposition Multi-Party Charter (MPC) edged higher to 36%. The radical EFF and IFP also improved their scores, to 17% and 7% respectively.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa called for restraint in the Israel-Palestine conflict and asked all state actors to refrain from supplying weapons to either party. The leader was speaking from the Cairo Peace Summit convened to discuss the situation.
  • Eskom announced that "due to the continued improved generation fleet performance and emergency reserves fully recovered, loadshedding will remain suspended and only resume on Tuesday at 16:00". The utility will implement Stage 1 loadshedding on Tuesday from 16:00 to 05:00 on Wednesday and will repeat this pattern daily until further notice.
  • Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will provide an update on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan today.
