Supreme Court Upholds 20yr Prison Sentence For Former Pres. Park

SOUTH KOREA

South Korea's Supreme Court delivered its verdict on the appeal of former President Park Geun-hye, deciding to uphold the initial sentence of 20 years in prison for an array of crimes including bribery and graft. This brings an end to the process of legal appeals for the former conservative leader.

  • The only way for Park (68) to avoid spending the next two decades in prison is a presidential pardon, something that has been mooted in an attempt to unite a politically divided country.
  • Head of the governing centre-left Democratic Party Lee Nak-yon has raised the prospect of Park and another conservative ex-president in prison on corruption charges, Lee Myung-bak, being pardoned in a 'display of national unity'.
  • The far-right Our Republican Party has maintained Park's innocence, but the main conservative People Power Party has not campaigned as vociferously for her release. A recent poll showed 48% of respondents in favour of Park's imprisonment and 47.7% against.
