Survey Shows Majority Would Support a National Coalition

SOUTH AFRICA
  • A Social Research Foundation survey shows a majority of South Africans would support a national coalition government struck between the major political parties. The survey found that 80% of respondents would support their favoured party entering into a governing coalition.
  • The poll follows a number of recent surveys suggesting the ruling ANC could lose their majority support at the 2024 elections, and could be forced to enter coalition for the first time since 1994.
  • Recall an IPSOS poll recently showed the ANC should hold on to power if an election were to be held "tomorrow". However, if support slips, they will remain in government as the lead coalition partner. The polling showed the ANC receiving 42%, while Ramaphosa remains the most popular political leader, receiving 5.5/10 against John Steenhuisen’s 3.3/10 and Julius Malema’s 3.8/10.
